A Message from the 2007
Leadership Giving Chairs
As the 2007 Leadership Giving chairs, we invite you to join us and countless others who share a deep commitment to improving the quality of life in our region.
More than 2,600 members strong, the Alexis de Tocqueville Society, the Virginians and the Capital Society account for more than one-third of United Way’s annual campaign. Through their generous support, these insightful individuals are creating lasting change.
Please join us. Together, we can get results that no one can accomplish alone.
Sincerely,
Charles H. Foster, Jr.

The Alexis de Tocqueville Society Award
Steve and Kathie Markel are the 2006 recipients of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society Award. This prestigious award honors recipients for their outstanding service and generosity that exemplify the true spirit of volunteerism that Tocqueville wrote of in Democracy in America.
Steve is a longtime board member for the Christian Children’s Fund and now serves as its vice chair. Steve and Kathie also transformed the VCU School of Business with a $10 million gift that makes them its single largest donor.
Kathie is the founder of Circle of Friends, a volunteer group performs service projects for area nonprofit organizations. In addition to founding and coordinating Circle of Friends, Kathie is on the boards of The Community Foundation of Richmond, Maymont Foundation (former president), First Tee of Richmond and Chesterfield, and the Advisory Board of VCU's Massey Cancer Center.
"Richmond has been so fortunate to have had numerous great philanthropists in its past and today our city is filled with many caring, involved and generous individuals,” Kathie Markel said. “It is as a tribute to them that we act and do our part to carry on this wonderful spirit in our city."
