June 4, 2026 | United Way
On June 4th, a sold-out crowd filled the Jepson Alumni Center at the University of Richmond for the fifth annual United Way WomenRise High Tea Fundraiser. Together, they raised over $100,000 for single mothers pursuing higher education, a record for the organization and a milestone that will change lives our region for years to come.
The United Way WomenRise program addresses one of the most persistent barriers keeping women from finishing their degrees: the cost of childcare. Through the support of donors and sponsors, WomenRise scholars can stay in the classroom, knowing their children are cared for.
“WomenRise is a beautiful example of what can happen when a community chooses to invest in single mothers who are determined to create a different future,” said Toni Shepard, United Way’s Family Resiliency Director.
CBS 6 anchor GeNienne Samuels brought warmth and purpose to the afternoon as emcee, grounding every moment in the mission behind it. Kelly Till, United Way Board Vice Chair and President of the Richmond Times-Dispatch and Lee Enterprises, whose dedication to this cause reflected her deep commitment to the community she serves. Together with United Way staff, volunteers, and a community of changemakers, the afternoon that was as meaningful as it was memorable.
The event was brought to life by vendor partners including the University of Richmond, Party Perfect, Vogue Flowers, Cap City Photobooth, Christversal, Hippchen Creative, and Janice Flowers.
