CARES

CARES provides emergency shelter to women and children experiencing homelessness due to a housing crisis or domestic violence. Last year, CARES served 170 adults and 132 children in a service area covering Petersburg, Colonial Heights and Hopewell, as well as the counties of Prince George, Dinwiddie, and Chesterfield.

The program strives to help families achieve emotional and financial stability in addition to affordable, permanent housing. Staff work with the women to develop a plan for obtaining a job, accessing needed services, and determining what type of housing best fits their needs and resources. Women also attend workshops on topics like nutrition, stress management, parenting, and job skills. Children receive tutoring and participate in age-appropriate activities.
