United Way is committed to improving the quality of life in the Greater Richmond-Petersburg region. To do so, we need sound research and data to provide us with an understanding of the region's most pressing human service needs.
Indicators of Community Strength
Community indicators are measures of conditions within a community that allow us to understand how the community is progressing in particular areas. United Way's biennual indicator report identifies trends in conditions for the 11 localities we serve in the Greater Richmond-Petersburg region.

Education
The Regional Plan for Children's School Readiness
United Way and Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond -- the initiative United Way leads in partnership with the Greater Richmond Chamber -- are working to improve our early childhood system and ensure that all children, from birth to age 5, in the Greater Richmond-Petersburg region are healthy, well-cared for, and ready to succeed in school and in life. The Regional Plan for Children’s School Readiness is the region’s roadmap to achieve this goal.
Home Visiting Resources and Capacity Analysis for the Greater Richmond & Petersburg Region
This analysis assesses the estimated need for home visiting services in the region and the resources needed to provide these services for all families who are eligible and willing to enroll in them.
An Actionable Agenda and Snapshot of Out of School Time in Richmond, Virginia 2009
The Actionable Agenda sets forth ambitious and bold strategies to increase collaboration and joint management of out of school time programs, engage regional and state policy makers in expanding programs as an economic development necessity, improve the quality of programming and tracking of results citywide, and facilitate increased access to opportunities for young people and their parents.

Ten Year Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness
United Way works closely with Homeward, the planning and coordinating organization for homeless services in the greater Richmond region. Homeward's mission is to prevent and end homelessness in the region, and United Way supports Homeward’s Ten Year Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness.

Homeward serves as our region's central resource for real-time, community-level data about homelessness. Twice each year, Homeward conducts a Point-In-Time Count to assess the number of people experiencing homelessness in the Greater Richmond-Petersburg region. Health
The Older Dominion Partnership
The Older Dominion Partnership is the statewide organization that is addressing the coming Age Wave, in which the number of adults in Virginia over age 65 will double in the next 20 years. The nonprofit initiative unites Virginia businesses, government, foundations, and nonprofits to serve as an inspiration, catalyst, and independent platform for networking, collaborating and planning among the state's local Age Wave coalitions. United Way and Senior Connections, the Capital Area Agency on Aging, are leading an Age Wave Planning coalition for the Greater Richmond-Petersburg region that works closely with The Older Dominion Partnership.
