The United Way Women’s Leadership Council kicked off this year’s I Love School Supply Drive early and in style! We teamed up with Radio 1, Paris Nicole of iPowerRichmond 92.1, and Walmart to kick off the drive during the tax free weekend. After announcing the drive to WLC members, James Taylor, CEO, and René Shepperson, Chair of the United Way Women’s Leadership Council of the United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg, put out the call to action in the community on iPower 92.1 from the Walmart in Short Pump.
During I Love School Supply Drive, we are collecting school supplies for kindergarten readiness kits from August 2016 to April 2017. These kits will be given to children who register for kindergarten at targeted elementary schools that serve low-income students. Kindergarten registration is in the spring, so the kids will benefit from these supplies all summer as they develop the necessary skills to succeed. United, we can help more kids be prepared to succeed in school.
Generous Walmart customer and IPower listeners donated over 2,100 school supply items which is a great start to our drive. Now, we need your help and the help of all United Way Women’s Leadership Council members to raise the rest of the supplies needed for 1,500 school readiness kits by April. We have a toolkit to help you host your own drive to rally your coworkers, friends, networks and family in support of our region’s rising kindergartners. Sign-up today to be part of the effort to give, advocate and volunteer in support of the I Love School Supply Drive.
