Former WLI Chair Named "Outstanding Woman" by YWCA

Sally Green, chair of United Way's Women's Leadership Initiative from 2008 to 2011, has been selected as one of nine local women to receive the 2012 Outstanding Women award from YWCA of Richmond.Sally Green reads to children during a WLI volunteer event.

She was nominated for the award by United Way and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond. Sally currently serves on the Board of Directors of both organizations.

"Sally exemplifies the word 'outstanding' through her visionary leadership, compassionate nature, and strong commitment to the community and improving the lives of others," said Claiborne Mason, Interim CEO of United Way and a United Way board member since 1996.

"We congratulate Sally and are excited that her leadership and achievements on behalf of our community have been recognized."

Sally serves as chief operating officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, overseeing a team of 1,500 employees while simultaneously giving her time and talent as a volunteer for many community organizations, including United Way.

As chair of United Way's Women’s Leadership Initiative, Sally brought together different women from around the region to invest their time, talent and financial resources to prepare today’s children to be tomorrow’s leaders. Under Sally's leadership, membership grew from 75 to 730 members, 15 key volunteer projects were completed totaling over 1,000 hours of volunteer service, and our first advocacy efforts were launched with more than 100 members calling, emailing and/or meeting directly with their elected officials.

Last year, initiative members set a record for their generosity, giving $543,000 to United Way – much of it directed to help young children succeed in school and in life.

All of these efforts have played a critical role in creating positive results  in the region, with considerable improvement  in the number of childcare centers earning quality ratings, more  children gaining the cognitive and literacy skills needed for kindergarten, and more  families receiving services in their homes to help them better prepare their children for school and life.
