The Salvation Army provides more than 40 programs that are specifically designed to meet the most urgent needs of Central Virginia. These programs are found within The Army’s core programs, including Family and Emergency Services that provide people in need with emergency shelter and food and The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club.

Programs Supported by the Community Action Fund:

The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club has served the Church Hill community since 1919. The Club provides a safe, nurturing environment for youth, with quality programming designed to develop each youth physically, emotionally and spiritually. Activities are offered in six areas, including character and leadership development, educational and career development, health and life skills, the arts, sports, fitness and recreation, and morality and values. The Club provides a wide range of activities to meet the diverse needs and interests of youth between the ages of 6 and 18. Core programs engage young people in activities with adults, peers, and family members and enable them to develop self-esteem and reach their full potentials.

The Men’s Emergency Shelter provides men who are experiencing homelessness with an initial 14-night stay with at least 2 meals a day, a shower and a bed. Extended stays may be granted as long as the individual follows an established individualized service plan. In addition, The Salvation Army Men's Emergency Shelter in Richmond provides employment assistance, life skills workshops, financial assistance, case management, and referrals to other community services. Women and Children’s.

The Women and Children’s Emergency Shelter provides shelter for homeless women and women with children in the Richmond metropolitan area. Single women are provided with an initial 14-night stay, while women who are pregnant and/or have children with them are provided with an initial 30-day stay. Case managers help residents develop individualized service plans that include measurable goals and objectives aimed towards addressing the underlying issues that led to the resident's current housing crisis. Stays may be extended if progress is being made toward these goals. In addition to food and shelter, the program offers employment assistance, life skills workshops, financial assistance, and referrals to other community services. Parenting classes are provided for women who are pregnant and/or have children. Special activities for children are also provided to help them cope with the stress and trauma of homelessness.

The Family Services program assists families and individuals with basic human needs in the primary areas of housing, utilities, food and clothing. The program provides financial assistance, mortgage and rent assistance, food, household items, clothing vouchers, and seasonal assistance (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.). Each client is assessed at intake and assistance and referrals to intra- and inter-agency services are provided as needed.
