Salvation Army: Southside (Tri-Cities Service Center)

The Salvation Army provides practical caring for individuals in need of emergency assistance: food, clothing, utilities and rent. They offer character-building activities for young people and host hospital visits and operate the only shelter in Petersburg for men who are homeless.

Programs Supported by the Community Action Fund:

Emergency Financial Assistance Program assists low income families and individuals with basic human needs, such as housing, utilities, medicine, food, and clothing. The services provided by the program include financial assistance to pay for heat or heat related utility bills, mortgage/rent, food, and clothing.

The Emergency Shelter program provides services to help homeless men transition into affordable housing and independent living. Last year, the program provided services to 466 men. In addition to shelter, the program provides drug and alcohol counseling, budgeting and life skills classes, job skills training, and case management. Outcome goals include gaining employment, improving literacy, and moving into permanent or transitional housing.
