United Way Prosperity Team

By Scott Bennett, United Way Young Leader

RVA’s young movers and shakers hit the streets again in mid-October.  The United Way Prosperity Street Team set-up at the East End Library and took action.  Our mission:  go door to door raising awareness and engaging the community on the importance of getting every tax dollar back for our hard-working citizens.

Did you know that the average return amount of the earned income tax credit (EITC) was just over $2,400?  That is real money in the pockets of hard working people in our community.  However, only 4 out of 5 people who are eligible actually claim their EITC.  The EITC is the nation’s largest anti-poverty program, lifting over 5 million people over the poverty line annually. There are millions of Americans who are eligible to receive money back for the first time ever this year.

Enter United Way’s MetroCASH program, free tax preparation service staffed by IRA Certified Tax Preparers and Cash Coaches.  In 2015, these volunteers helped generate more than $2.9 million in federal and state tax refunds for working adults in the Richmond region.  More than a dozen tax preparation sites will be available this tax season.  You can find one close to you by visiting the website here: www.metrocash.org.

Join us – as a client or a volunteer.  We want to close that gap to ensure everyone who is eligible receives their return.  This money can be a boost to you, your family, and the community. We are always looking for more volunteers to help us continue to hits the streets, just like the Prosperity Street Team.  Check out http://www.yourunitedway.org/get-involved/young-leader-society/ for more information.
