Young Leader Spotlight: Maureen Slotnick

Maureen Slotnick, most recently from Wins for Warriors Foundation, answers your questions and discusses why she chooses to LIVE UNITED with United Way Young Leaders Society.

Question: What made you want to become involved with United Way and, more specifically, the Young Leaders Society? How long have you been a member?

I became involved with United Way because I saw it as a way to connect with my community, volunteer, advocate and give back to Richmond and Petersburg. I became a member of Young Leaders in Fall of 2015 to connect with my peers and get more involved with the impact United Way makes in our community. I am really enjoying the experience!

“If you really knew me, you’d know ____.”

My husband is deployed to Afghanistan for 1 year, it’s an adventure at times but as long as I keep running, drinking coffee and the kids avoid the hospital, it was a good day.

The United Way Young Leaders Society is focused on connecting, serving, giving, and leading. With which do you identify the most? Why?

Giving, whether it is a time, an idea or a fundraiser, I’m truly happiest when I’m giving to others.

When are you the happiest?

I am happiest when I am serving others and making a connection for the greater good.

Have you attended a conference/workshop/symposium/etc. that left a lasting impression? What about the experience has stayed with you?

I took a training with ?What If! Innovation Partners in NYC on learning to flex your creative superpowers, which include Greenhousing, Playfulness, Signaling, Freshness, Realness, Momentum, and Bravery.  The strategy includes always having productive creativity – the habit of continually doing things in new ways to make a positive difference to our working lives.

What is your favorite locally-owned establishment and why?

Appomatox Peanut and Wine Shop in Hopewell is a great local place for me to get gifts for other peanuts, cards, beverages, while supporting a small local business in my community. I live nearby at Fort Lee.

If you ruled the world, what would you change on Day 1?

That the world would be focused more on positivity than negativity. It seems too often people are tearing each other down, instead of lifting each other up. How boring would the world be if we were all the same?  We need to embrace and celebrate difference!
