Free ‘Drop-Off’ Tax Assistance Program in New Kent County

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 13, 2020) – New Kent County residents who earned less than $56,000 in 2019 can get their taxes done for free this tax season thanks to United Way of Greater Richmond and Peterburg’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. United Way is offering a new complimentary and convenient “Drop-Off” version of the service beginning Tuesday, January 28.

The Drop-Off tax program will operate at New Kent Health & Human Services, located at 12025 Courthouse Circle, at the following dates and times:

  • January 28, 9 a.m.-noon
  • February 21, 9 a.m.-noon
  • March 12, 1-4 p.m.
  • March 19, 1-4 p.m.

Appointments are required. To register, call 804-775-6432.

At the appointment, customers will meet with an IRS-certified tax preparer while sharing relevant identification information and tax documents. A team of trained tax preparers will complete returns at United Way’s office. Customers will schedule a follow-up appointment at the New Kent Health & Human Services office to review, approve and file the tax return.

United Way is partnering with Quin Rivers and New Kent Department of Social Services to offer the service in New Kent.

United Way uses the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program to ensure tax returns are accurate and that customers receive their full refunds, while helping people avoid unclaimed credits, fees for tax preparation services and refund anticipation loans. Through the program, eligible taxpayers are able to take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit which is a federal refundable credit for income eligible working individuals and families.

The New Kent location is one of 15 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites United Way is organizing across the region. In 2019, local United Way volunteers helped more than 3,600 households with tax preparation. Approximately $838,300 in EITC funds was distributed by the IRS to families who took advantage of the service.
