Celebrating Publix Appreciation Day
United Way’s second largest worldwide contributor gives back to the Greater Richmond & Petersburg community.
Richmond, Va. (Feb. 24, 2020) – United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg is celebrating its partnership with local Publix Super Market stores on Publix Appreciation Day, February 24, 2020.
Having entered our market just two years ago, Publix has quickly become one of the largest United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg supporters in the area, raising more than $380,000 locally since 2018. United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg proudly recognized Publix as its 2019 Corporate Partner of the Year at the 2019 Steps to Success Awards breakfast.
Publix has been a long-time supporter of local United Ways across seven states beginning in 1979. Since then, Publix has raised $65.3 million for United Way, making it the organization’s second largest contributor worldwide.
Corporate partnerships like these allow United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg to lead data-driven solutions to major problems in our region, such as homelessness, literacy and financial well-being. This year, United Way will fund a total of $8.7 million in programs at dozens of local nonprofits while continuing to expand programs of its own, such as Kindergarten Countdown Camp, which launched in 2019.
“Any community is stronger when local businesses support their local United Way, and our area is no different. The Greater Richmond and Petersburg region is stronger because of Publix’s deeply rooted commitment to helping the community,” said James L.M. Taylor, President & CEO of United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg. “Our partnership with Publix empowers us to help more people in more places, and we look forward to celebrating Publix Appreciation Day for many years to come.”
Publix is currently operating 13 stores throughout Greater Richmond and Petersburg with plans to open two additional stores in 2020. In total, Publix is currently operating 1,270 stores throughout Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.
