Sept. 11: United Way Organizing Volunteer Pop-Up on National Day of Service and Remembrance

Nonprofit seeks 300 volunteers to assemble emergency-preparedness kits

RICHMOND, Va. (Sept. 6, 2022) – To recognize the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg will host a community volunteer pop-up at Triple Crossing Brewery in Fulton. Volunteers will help create emergency-preparedness kits that will be distributed to vulnerable families by the YWCA of Richmond.

The event takes place on Sunday, Sept. 11 from noon-4 p.m. United Way is hoping to create over 1,100 emergency-preparedness kits at this event, and they are in need of additional volunteers to help reach this goal! Individuals and groups can register at Eventbrite.com.

Two-thirds of Americans don’t feel fully prepared for potential natural disasters, with many lacking emergency-preparedness items, according to national polling. By distributing these kits to lower-income communities, United Way hopes to relieve financial barriers that prevent these families from accessing basic emergency-preparedness items so that everyone has sufficient tools to respond to natural disasters.

Volunteers will help create United Way kits, which contain educational and emergency-preparedness materials including:

  • Matching game
  • Johnson & Johnson Red Cross Mini First Aid-to-Go Kit
  • LED Flashlight with batteries
  • Emergency Foil Mylar Thermal Blanket
  • Blue Flex Foldable 16 oz. Water Bottle with carabineer
  • Food item

“On this important day, it is critical to remember not only the tragedy of the attacks, but also the unity with which our nation responded,” said James L.M. Taylor, President and CEO at United Way. “We hope that by coming together to serve those less fortunate, we will be reminded that we have more in common than that which separates us.”

Food and drinks will be available for purchase at the event with 15% of total beer sales going towards United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg. Volunteers can learn more about the event and register at Eventbrite.com.
