United Way Announces 2022 WomenRise Scholarship Recipients

Twenty-three single mothers will receive funding, an approximate increase of 280% from year one

RICHMOND, Va. (Aug 24, 2022) – United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg has announced the recipients of its second annual WomenRise scholarship program, which empowers single mothers to work toward a post-secondary degree or credential without the burden of childcare expenses. As a result of the success of the inaugural year and the generosity of donors, the number of program participants was able to increase by nearly fourfold from year one.

Twenty-three local single mothers will receive a total of $185,000 in childcare scholarships from United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg. WomenRise scholarships will cover the cost of childcare while these mothers work toward a range of degrees and certifications including elementary and kindergarten education and nursing. The length of the scholarships varies depending on the recipients’ individual education plans.

“Childcare is a substantial expense for any family, especially so for single mothers, who often pay more than $1,000 per month, per child.  Many single mothers are forced to choose between paying for childcare and furthering their education,” said James L.M. Taylor, President & CEO of United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg. “We’re pleased to be expanding the program this year, and we look forward to seeing all the great things that this inspirational group of women will accomplish.”

United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg is currently seeking financial support from local donors and organizations who want to help sustain this program and support more single mothers in 2023. The upcoming fundraising phase will be critical in determining the number of WomenRise scholarship recipients and the amount of each scholarship.
