The service is free and confidential and is available in 140 different languages. In addition to basic needs like housing and food assistance, 211 also can refer you to information on local physical and mental health services, worker training programs, services for children and seniors as well as volunteer opportunities. Which agencies does United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg fund?

How can my agency become a United Way partner?
United Way makes grant awards as part of a three-year funding cycle, with first-year grantee organizations eligible to apply for grant renewals in subsequent years. Qualifying agencies are welcome to apply at the beginning of the next funding cycle in 2022. To determine whether your 501(c)3 organization qualifies for support, contact us.
Does United Way provide direct financial support to Planned Parenthood?
No, Planned Parenthood is not a United Way-funded program. However, donors in the community may make a donor-designated gift to any qualifying nonprofit organization in the region we serve. Such designated contributions are not United Way grants.

Does my gift to United Way stay local?
98% of all gifts to United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg stay right here in our region. We pay a small membership fee to United Way Worldwide, which gives us access to the United Way brand and enables us to leverage United Way’s relationship with large, national organizations to drive positive change in the Greater Richmond & Petersburg area.
What is United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg’s overhead rate?
Our operational costs are only 15.21 percent, which is consistent with similar nonprofits in the region. Our operational costs break down as follows:
- Management/General (6.29%). This includes standard operating costs such as information technology, human resources, finance and general administration costs. In short: We invest in a strong back office structure so you can be confident your dollars go to an efficient, well-run organization.
- Fundraising (8.92%). This includes United Way’s fundraising efforts and takes into account a variety of functions including resource development, major gifts and marketing and communications. These fundraising efforts enable us to generate resources and invest in the community in ways that would not happen otherwise.
A note about overhead: As the central convener and unified voice for hundreds of nonprofits across the region, United Way employs a fundraising team that manages donor relationships and ensures we are well-positioned to support many fantastic local organizations. Thanks to United Way’s support, many small nonprofits do not require large fundraising teams, which enables them to keep their overhead low.
How does a United Way workplace giving campaign work?
United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg’s workplace campaigns brings your team together to plan and execute an internal fundraising campaign that encourages employees to donate to their local United Way through payroll deduction.
Campaigns typically last a week or two and include fun, employee-friendly activities and volunteer opportunities. Each campaign is different and tailored to your organization’s unique culture and identity.
