Who We Are
Through coalition building, regional leadership, program investments, and fundraising, United Way mobilizes the caring power of our community to advance the common good. We focus on the building blocks of a good life:
Your contribution to United Way helps people most in need right here in the Richmond-Petersburg region. Your gift does more than just support people who are in urgent need right now – you also support meaningful, lasting change that impacts the entire community.
For more than 90 years, United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg has brought the community together to help those in need. While our name may have changed slightly over the years, we have remained committed to our community. Here’s a brief timeline with some interesting milestones.
Concerned citizens met to discuss how to help meet community needs. This meeting was the beginning of United Way.
Richmond launched its first Community Chest campaign.
The Community Fund, as it was called at that time, merged with the newly created United Fund to become the United Givers Fund of Richmond, Henrico and Chesterfield.
Hanover County joined the United Givers Fund.
The United Givers Fund became known as United Way of Greater Richmond.
United Way of Greater Richmond merged with United Way of Southside Virginia to form United Way Services.
United Way Services completed its transformation to a community impact organization. United Way’s success could no longer be measured only by the dollars raised in the annual campaign. Success was determined by the measurable community impact achieved by creating organized solutions, funding critical programs, building capacity, and improving the community’s system of services.
United Way Services became known as United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg.
